Lora Coggins: Perfectly fine app, just two things that I'm a little annoyed about: 1. The messages with the attachments don't actually show the attachments in the final result, even if it's just a photo. 2. Backing it up to Google Drive is not really worth it since it comes in an XML file, it takes you to a website to make the XML file "more readable", and then the site says "Download the messages on the app to view it." It would have been better to keep it local. Other than that, it's a solid app.

Elizabeth Fritzler: Amazing. Google doesn't offer an option to backup or restore texts and calls, so I thought I was going to have to start from scratch when I got a new phone. Even after a week of having my new phone, I was able to use SMS Backup & Restore to get the texts from my old phone (which no longer had service) onto my new one. Even better, the app didn't overwrite any messages I'd already received on the new phone, so I didn't lose anything at all. Excellent app, highly recommended!!!

Ricky Polser: After using this many times in the past this use was very disappointing. The first two attempts took forever and failed. Third attempt locked up the phone had to reboot and when I did the program was in loop saying it was a pending upload. The best part is it corrupted the texts on the phone and they are no longer accessible. Thank you very much SMS backup and restore. Thank you for your reply. I guess they all magically disappeared in the two hours your program was reading the files.

Justin Smith: This app does exactly what it's been told to do, whether you want it to or not. ;) Make sure you disable the ability for it to work in the background on mobile data if you dont have an unlimited data plan.. Over the last year I started periodically running out of data. I was buying 3 gig chunks and even eventually upgraded my plan, and then immediately ran out of data. It turns out that Backup & Restore was dumping gigs of data in the middle of the night. This feature should be default off.

Matt Sicignano: Installed fine, seemed easy and intuitive to use. After installation, there is an option for "test mode". I thought, great, before I did something irreversible, let me try this. Uploaded to my Google drive, opened it up, and there it was "SMS Backup and Restore test successful". I thought, this is going well! Did the call and sms upload, successful, then went to my drive. opened up the sms and call.xsl and -gibberish! Not a readable file in there ! There's just text strings with no usable data.

A Google user: It did not work for me. It seemed to be working without any hassles -- I saw the transfer from and to graphs indicating a transfer. After about 7 or 8 minutes I got a message that the transfer was complete. But when I went to the receiving device (a new Pixel 3) the SMS messages were not there. Nor was call history information. I tried a second time and same thing happened Edit: Phone data did transfer. SMS did not. So I'll give two stars instead of one. Update Got the messages restored using the clear storage suggestion in the FAQ

A Google user: Installed for the purpose of backing up sms conversations and I must say the way this app operates is no good. for one, the filesize of long conversations is much bigger than expected. what's worse is it only backs up one side of the conversation, the replies are saved in a separate group and it's impossible to make sense of it. it should backup the conversation as it appears in the messaging app and in chronological order, not the way Sms backup and restore does it, truly no good.

A Google user: A key sentence to note before using this software: "Advanced messaging is not supported." Of course, there's no explanation for the lay user about what this simple sentence means, so even though I did multiple backups of my SMS and MMS messages, I lost over two years of outgoing messages when I did the restore. It's really AT&T's fault, but I think SMS Backup & Restore should be more clear about what their software can and cannot do. Be up front and say plainly that this software cannot backup any outgoing messages that were sent after AT&T auto-enabled "Advanced Messaging" on my phone. Thanks.
