People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) puts people and conservation together, running national surveys to monitor wild mammals.

Mammals on Roads collects records of mammals, dead and alive, along road journeys in the UK. Changes in counts of species such as hedgehogs, foxes and badgers, over time, reflect changes in the wider population. Findings have already alerted us to the decline in hedgehog and rabbit numbers, driving conservation efforts and further research.

The app records your route and enables non-drivers to log mammals as they see them.

Audio files give information about some of the species.

This updated app (July 2020) corrects bugs in earlier versions.

Help us to record the mammals on our roads and together we can work to ensure wild Britain isn’t lost.

Information about permissions:

– Internet: Needed to submit survey results and error reports (if you have enabled this) and retrieve maps
– Access course location, access fine location: We need to know where you are to conduct the survey!
– Access network state, access wi-fi state, read external storage, write external storage: Needed by the mapping library we use to display maps properly and store temporary map data

Alex G: Not user-friendly. Unable to retrospectively add animals seen on roads, as it wants to put them all in my back garden! The submit button obscures the dead/alive slider, unless you turn the phone to landscape instead of portrait. Please improve functionality.

Deborah Joy: Good idea but so many fundamental issues with the app. Firstly like others have said if you're driving you can't record what you have seen. An option to go onto a map and pin point a record would be better. Plus there is the milage issue just popping into town 10 miles away I see at least 3 or 4 dead animals each week. Great in principle and I can see how the data would be useful but im uninstalling for now, untill these are corrected. Otherwise its an app taking up space on your phone

Georgina Hawes: Unable to get past screen asking for "postal address if you want to hear from us by post" which I don't. Please can this be fixed so I can use the app? - EDIT - it appears to just be asking confirmation of age - might want to change wording of warning to limit confusion!

Julia Timothy: Recent update has now fixed the issue with the app not opening. Haven't used it yet for a survey. Disappointing that journeys have to be at least 20 miles, but this is presumably a parameter of the study not anything to do with the app as such

A Google user: Great idea and, I REALLY wanted to be able to use it. But when one is driving in one's own,(which is most of the time, unfortunately),; it's too dangerous to take ones eyes from the road and fiddle with ones phone. It needs some voice commands added. Plus, only 3 tours of animal!? Some thing must be wrong there, as the pictures show more. So I've had to uninstall it. Sorry. Two stars for the the great idea.

A Google user: thought this was a great idea but only seem to be able to record sightings during a journey. As I'm usually driving or pillion on a bike this isn't practical. Or is there a way of recording later?

A Google user: I have just installed this app, so I have only given a 2 star rating & that's for the design & audio descriptions. I do however have 1 query & hope it gets answered - Why can we only start the app on journeys of 20miles or more?? We drive from our home to the town which is 17miles (roughly) & on numerous occasions, we have seen more than 3 hedgehogs, 1 badger & countless deer, all dead in/on the edge of the roads. We use the (B1111) & it's really busy. Can U change it to 10miles please?
