About MI COVID Alert

MI COVID Alert is the COVID-19 exposure notification app supported by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), in partnership with SpringML, Google, and Apple. This app uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) API framework created through a unique collaboration between Apple and Google.

Your personal use of MI COVID Alert helps inform others of possible exposure to COVID-19 if they are suspected of having been within close proximity to someone who has tested positive. When you download MI COVID Alert, you are helping your community stay ahead of any potential surge in COVID-19 cases.

How MI COVID Alert Works:
Once downloaded, users of the app who have enabled it will exchange anonymous Bluetooth “keys” (random alpha-numeric codes that represent a Bluetooth signal) with other MI COVID Alert users.

If someone reports that they tested positive for COVID-19, the app will search for other users who shared the Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) signal. The BLE signals are date-stamped and MI COVID Alert estimates how close the two devices were based on signal strength. If the timeframe was at least 15 minutes and the estimated distance was within six feet, then the other user receives a notification of a possible exposure. Names of users and locations of possible exposure are never tracked and never shared.

The BLE framework within MI COVID Alert will run in the background, even if the exposure notification app is closed. It will not drain the device battery at a rate faster than other apps that use normal Bluetooth and/or are open and running continuously.

How MI COVID Alert Protects Your Privacy:
MDHHS takes your privacy very seriously. This is why we chose to use the Apple and Google BLE framework. No personal data or location tracking occurs within MI COVID Alert.

MDHHS and local public health staff follow up with persons who have a positive COVID-19 laboratory report. Public health will provide MI COVID Alert users with a validation pin. That validation pin must be entered into the app to report a notification of possible exposure to other users. This prevents people from falsely reporting positive results, which could generate false exposure notifications.

If you have the current Apple or Google operating system installed on your device, you may have noticed that Exposure Notifications are now included. You cannot enable this function until you have downloaded MI COVID Alert. Apple and Google will delete the exposure notification service tools from their respective operating systems once the pandemic reaches a point that public health no longer requires the use of this technology.

Vanessa Zhong: I traveled to Michigan for a convention and installed the app so I'd know if I had come into contact with covid. It scans and tells me daily that I have no exposure. However, I got covid. I cannot add my illness to the app to notify others. I called the toll free number given and held for a long time to be given the message that I needed to report my case in the state where I live. I'm not sure how this helps people 2,000 miles away. They won't know they were exposed. Then the rep gave me a phone number to a county health dept in Michigan where no one even answered the phone. No wonder cases are on the rise in Michigan! They have an incompetent state health system.

Julianna Morgenthaler: I don't think this app works. Both my friend and I have it installed on our phones & he tested positive for covid, got a pin & reported it & I never received a notification despite being with him daily before he tested positive as well as after. We were both very surprised that I never received a notification since we both have the app active, he reported it and I was with him before, during & after he tested positive. Not sure why I have this on my phone if it is never going to notify me.

Matt Redding: I too found this useless for contact tracing. On 12/28/21 I tried to report my positive result and found I had to call to get a pin. I contacted the Washtenaw county health department & after digging through their phone menu for quite a while my call disconnected. Next I called the state's COVID hotline and someone took my information and said they would PUT IN MY APPLICATION and a pin would be texted to me. It should have been issued on the spot! This is a useless app.

Lu Chen: Not sure if I just don't understand the interface, but the notifications are rather unhelpful. Details on where and when the exposure happened would help. Not to get info on the person who tested positive, but just to have the background to assess if it is a true exposure concern.

Joseph Erlewein: It started out ok.. in 2020. But the app now seems infrequently updated and the data seems very out of date. The newest "news" item was from April 2021 (on Dec 22, 2021!). I only noticed because I got a new phone and was moving apps over and completely forgot I installed this because it was never useful. Anyway I reinstalled it only to find it very "stale" ... amid the peak of the MI omicron wave onset?? Will probably remove it. :/

Jay Stiles: It stopped checking back in February. Uninstalled and reinstalled, but it doesn't say it stopped checking unless you go into the app every day and see the last time it did run a check. Also does not inform you if you have been exposed after it stops checking. Reinstall starts it fresh with no history data. Yes bluetooth is on, so don't ask.

Christina West: Constantly stops checking . Need to Uninstall and reinstall every few days. edit: that sites instructions are terrible. I tried multiple times to figure it out. And needed to do anything extra to get your app to work still means it's terrible and deserves 1 star. EDIT AGAIN: yeah those instructions aren't exact, but I did it and the app would still stop checking after a couple days. Even if I opened the app every single day. No one should have to change settings for this to work.

Natalie M: My app hasn't checked for any exposures since Feb 6th. I don't have an update option, and all permissions are granted. Frustrating. - I tried to export and nothing happens on my end. I clicked "export" and I didn't have the option to view or email anything over.

Jessica Ball: Data is old and hasn't been updated. I dont trust that this would help keep me safe at ALL ETA: Added star because of the response from the developer, but data is still wrong. Michigan covid deaths specifically. When the average person can get accurate data by using a quick Google search, I would much rather be able to open my app and get all data available as ACCURATELY as possible.

Meredith Harleton: Unfortunately this app is not very useful. I was not even able to enter that I had COVID to alert anyone. It requires a number from the health department who never contacted me. I tried to go on their site to contact someone but never got a response. I was so frustrated I couldn?t use it to alert people. It?s a great idea but in my case felt Totally pointless
