About Ayakamaé

This application is an educational product of a Course Completion Paper (TCC) of the Degree in Physics at the Federal Institute of São Paulo – Campus Registro and was supervised by Professor Natalia Bortolaci and co-supervised by Professor Doctor Gregori de Arruda Moreira, both professors of the Institute. The application was born from the concern to enrich Astronomy Teaching through the interaction of traditional Brazilian indigenous knowledge and technology, with the purpose of acting both in basic education and in scientific dissemination.
The material was prepared, focusing on first-year high school students, in order to be a tool that enables the introduction of Astronomy in the context of Physics Education, seeking to bring together topics of Brazilian indigenous knowledge about some phenomena of nature in relation to patterns that are repeated in the sky.
The activities present in the app, although aimed at the target audience in question, may enrich the learning of all other users, especially for those who have not had greater contact with this subject so far.
The application can be used concurrently with the development of classes that seek to introduce Astronomy in High School, or at another time, place and by any user, as long as it includes a prior knowledge of the basic subjects of Natural Sciences – according to the science curriculum of the nature of Elementary School, as stated in the National Common Curriculum Base (BNCC) of 2021 -.
The material's content is inspired by several materials and tools on the themes of Astronomy, Physics Teaching and indigenous knowledge. Some of them are referenced at the end of the explanation screens and others are present and argued in the TCC monograph “'Ayakamaé': An application for the Teaching of Astronomy based on Brazilian indigenous knowledge”.
The texts of the explanations of the activities are excerpts from the references mentioned in the application, while the questions, tips and comments were created by me in order to enable the understanding of the topics covered in an interactive way. The app's artwork and some images in the activities are products of a joint work with Yasmin Cardoso (Portfolio on Instagram: @yasmincardoso.arq).
We believe that with the expansion of approaches in the teaching of Astronomy, it is possible to link up with other fields of knowledge and to rescue the link between us and the original peoples of Brazil in relation to the “things of Heaven”. Expanding the possibilities of forming, through the different sciences, citizens capable of dealing with the current challenges of society, providing better conditions for the population to act more and more with a critical sense on scientific matters.
