Alex Z: Avoid this until they fix the download bug. The first step once it's downloaded is to update some data files. The problem is that it never completes the download so the app never gets past it. Update: I raised the rating to 3 stars because I was able to get all the files downloaded. But it took almost 48 hours and it would only get one of the 14 files at a time. Connecting to the scope is easy and it controls it great.
Molly Wakeling: This is hands-down the best planetarium app. I started using SkyPortal for my astrophotography planning, and upgraded to Pro for the additional targets and features. I keep lists of targets I want to image, have a panorama of my backyard overlaid for planning, and figure out what will work with my field of view. The cloud backup is handy for getting new phones. Love love love it! Easy and intuitive to use, and has a massive catalog.
Philippe Fossier: Great app. Lots of features not found in the more common apps used to track planets in the night sky. SkySafari can be complex to learn and use effectively but with some effort, you get quite a bit from it: very complete information on the objects in the sky, good photography, nice controls, informative tutorials. I have not yet used it to control a telescope but that's next.
Isaac Stain: If I had rated this program last year, I would've given it all 5 stars. The reason I am giving it 1 star is because since January 16th of this year, there has been a glitch or malfunction that has taken place with Sky Safari 6 Pro. Since January 16th, all of the days from the early AD period and BC period have been out of sync (they no longer fall on the accurate days of the week. In addition, all the lunar phases no longer fall on the accurate days of the month anymore). I hope this gets fixed.
Pete Thurmes: Was originally crashing regularly. I now avoid in-app slew buttons and very few crashes since. But I only gave 3 stars because their help is almost as lame as Microsoft's. Specifically, I haven't found any way to search help. Have never seen this in any app before (and it's really lame). Another problem is there are too many special modes that give no indication how to get out of them. Accidentally touch a button and you're screwed.
A Google user: For any observer of the night sky, I would highly recommend this software for all your astronomy observing needs, hands down. I have been using every version of Sky Safari pro since SSP3. Just upgraded from SSP5 to SSP6, and I have to say I like the additional features in version 6, as well as the updated object data base, stars, and the planets, moons, and other minor solar system objects. Very accurate, high precision piece of software that is very super handy to use during observing sessions.
A Google user: Great app, most likely the best you will get outside of Starynight. Only issue is in some of the graphics, like the Apollo missions paid add on. That is about as ugly, graphic wise, that I have seen since the early 1990's. With the availability of graphic software these days, there is absolutely no excuse for boxy planets. Those I cannot give it 5 stars, since you charge $3.99 for junk like that.
A Google user: SkySafari is hands down the best night sky app on mobile. It's extremely useful for us amateur astronomers to set up and frame shots. My only criticism would be that it doesn't show a more detailed image of certain objects when trying to frame them up. It's sometimes difficult to know how large some of the more diffuse nebula are and what their orientation is. The app just doesn't show that detail the way sites like Telescopius does. Would be nice if that was an option.
A Google user: The good: it connects, aligns and then gives access to a tremendous library of objects all controllable with a tablet or phone. The (My) bad: I lose connection about 3-4 hours in. I can't reconnect unless I power off the entire scope causing me to have to redo my entire alignment and redo my settings on my computer to keep taking pictures. This always happens, without fail, every time I use the app. I have a Celestron AVX with the wifi module plugged in. WiFi is set to access point, as direct connect is way too laggy to deal with. I have no issues when first starting for the night, but after a few hours, it refuses to connect, sending the "can not connect to scope" or "connected but scope is not responding". I kind of think I'm gonna start using the hand controller again.
A Google user: This app is pretty much the ultimate app for the active astronomer, both hobbyist and many professionals. The new object databases drawing on the recently released GAIA catalog meets the need of many researchers, as well as hobbyists with monster telescopes. And speaking of telescopes, the telescope control features will work with virtually any telescope, including those with simple encoders on their axes. And even with all this, there are versions of this program for the most basic observer, even one who only observes with their naked eye. I simply cannot say enough good things about this program!
